Investment Prospests - Ship Building

GUJARAT, India is a pioneering, futuristic and entrepreneurial state of the country. In particular, Gujarat's maritime sector is considered to be the most proactive and well developed sectors of India. During the year 2010-11, ports handled about 231 million tones of cargo, which accounted for 80 per cent of the total cargo handled by all the minor ports of India. The milestone achieved by the State of Gujarat in the port sector is by a virtue of its 1640 km long coastline.  

With the continuous penetration of economic globalization, Gujarat shipbuilding industry, whose share has kept rising in recent years, is becoming the significant shipbuilding centers of the world. The State is strongly emerging as a new shipbuilding destination in South Asia with many projects in pipeline.

Gujarat boasts a share of 47% of Indian shipbuilding order book with 3.92 Million DWT order book as on June 2008.  Presently, Gujarat has six shipbuilding yards in operation, three under execution, eight under the process of approval and Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) has envisaged for thirteen more notable shipbuilding projects.

Sheth Construction Group is committed for developing diverse business in the region and interested in such types of potential projects.

The government of the region is interested in proceeding rapidly with the privatization of ship building industries and in encouraging an influx of foreign, private sector capital investment to help revitalize the county’s economy.

The State Government along is committed to develop the industry and utilize all the competitive advantage of its positioning.  GMB is promoting the strategy of cluster form of Shipyards development known as Marine Shipbuilding Parks (MSP) at multiple locations with private player participation.

Five locations have been identified along the Gujarat Coast to develop it as ‘Marine Shipbuilding Park’. The five identified locations are:

  1. North bank of Narmada River in Dahej region
  2. Old Bhavnagar port area
  3. Coastline in Bhavnagar district in the Gulf of Cambay 
  4. Coastal between Navlakhi to Jodiya
  5. Coastline near Mandvi in the Gulf of Kutch

Bhavnagar port is an all-weather direct berthing port for smaller vessels. It has a draught of up to 4 m and is located in the Gulf of Cambay on the West Coast of India. Bhavnagar is strongly emerging as a new shipbuilding destination in South Asia with many projects in pipeline. With Indian companies planning to drop anchors on Gujarat’s shores, Bhavnagar is likely to harbor huge investments in the development of shipyards. The sector has witnessed a major thrust with 45 proposed projects with an envisaged investment of a huge amount by well established private players as well as by foreign investors.

Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) is going to allot shipbuilding plot in different vicinity of Bhavnagar and it was our plan since long back to spread our wings in the field of shipbuilding and repairing activities and hence we already have applied our self for this opportunity. Where we want to invite the foreign companies having global existence in the field of Ship Building / Ship Repair for a joint venture where we can grow together.
